Save Valuable Vacation Time – Make Your Central Base Tipperary

Some 27 close-knit members of the ‘Kenny Clan,’ led by George Kenny and his wife Sandy, visited Thurles for some six days last week; all part of their summer vacation and ongoing research into their roots.

Gathered from all over the USA, the ‘Clan Kenny’ group choose the historic Lisheen Castle, near Thurles, Co Tipperary as the location for their main base and recent sojourn.

American, Australian and other welcome European and Asian visitors searching for their roots and who carefully and intelligently plan their trips to Ireland are now beginning to wisely make their holiday bases here in Thurles, Co.Tipperary. Of course logically and geographically Thurles Co. Tipperary represents the very hub of Ireland, providing just a one or two hour drive, at most, to access most of Ireland’s historical and scenic areas, (e.g. Cobh – 1 h 20 min or 126.4 km, Cliffs of Moher – 2 hrs or 156.8 km, Kilkenny Castle – 44 min or 48 km, Dublin’s Trinity College – 1 h 31 min or 146.2 km etc.).

Visitors on the other hand who choose their central holiday base on Ireland’s coastline, soon learn to their financial and other costs that a great deal of vacation time is being lost in attempting to reach these same destinations, during any visit. Coastline visitors end up instead constantly forced to change their ‘base camps’ in their efforts, over a short period, to pack in all of what our green and pleasant Ireland has to offer.

George and Sandy Kenny, through their own research, have discovered that their Kenny ancestors first arrived in America, possibly sometime in 1846 during the great Irish famine (1845-1849) period. However while records of their arrival in New York are recorded, to date little is known about from whence they originally hailed here in Ireland. To this end if anyone has any information on known Kenny immigrants in or around that period in Irish history, perhaps you could contact us here on Thurles.Info and we can arrange to connect you with the US Kenny Clan.

The Clan members, many of whom are keen musicians, visited the Monk’s Traditional Irish Pub here in Thurles, to join local musicians as part of their regular Wednesday night Irish music jam sessions.

We look forward and welcome their promised return trip to Ireland in the not too distant future.

Last, but by no means least, a big ‘Thank You‘ to classic rock and folk singers, songwriters and musicians; Nikki Turner and Nora Fogarty ; latter also Sean-nós (Irish for “old style”) singer for their granting of the free use of their great vocal & musical talents, in the making of this slide-show video.

Tipperary Represented At Milwaukee Irish Fest

Killaloe-1An all-island tourism delegation from counties Tipperary, Armagh, Clare and Dublin, latter areas with strong connections to the only undisputed High King of Ireland, Brian Ború, will embark on a promotional drive in the United States next week.

Coinciding with the millennial anniversary of Ború’s death at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, National Brian Ború Programme representatives from Tipperary, Armagh, Clare and Dublin, will attend the annual Milwaukee Irish Fest in Wisconsin, where they will be seeking to attract some of the estimated 150,000 festival goers to Ireland.

Internationally, Brian Ború is celebrated for his contribution to uniting Ireland and quelling the destabilising impact of the Vikings. Born in Killaloe in East Clare, Brian Ború became the only undisputed High King of Ireland and today is regarded as the most significant figure in Irish history.

Ború is a central theme of this year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest from August 14th -17th. Established in 1981 by members of Milwaukee’s Irish community, the Fest covers 74 acres of Lake Michigan’s shoreline and showcases Irish music, history, dance, drama, sports and culture. The Festival is also used by tourist agencies such as Tourism Ireland, Aer Lingus and CIE Tours, as an opportunity to market Ireland as a desirable tourist destination.

The travelling Ború tourism delegation will be located in the festival’s ‘Cultural Pavilion,’ where extensive promotional material on visitor attractions associated with Ború will be distributed.

Members of the delegation, which includes historians, living history interpreters, genealogists, musicians, a bowyer and a folk theatre group will also deliver a series of public lectures and demonstrations on Brian Ború’s life in culture, history, food, genealogy and music.

Among the sites and buildings associated with Brian Ború that will be promoted in Milwaukee will be Killaloe where he was born, Clontarf where he was killed following his victory over the Viking rulers of Dublin in 1014, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the City of Armagh where he is buried; the Rock of Cashel where he was crowned High King of Ireland; and Lough Derg and the River Shannon where his navy was located.

All four locations feature prominently in the National Brian Ború Programme, a comprehensive nationwide programme of commemorative festivals and events taking place during 2014.

Tipperary Representation at Milwaukee Irish Fest

Sean Laffey, writer and editor for Irish Music Magazine, headed up the Cashel Heritage group, which produced the 2014 Ború celebrations. He will speak on the music of warriors, among other things.
Geraldine Wall Laffey, an educator, will present scriptorium lettering in both the Children’s Tent and the Boru Tent
Joanne Hughes, an archaeologist and member of the Cashel Heritage Group, is an expert on the Viking excavations in Ireland. She will present a Viking dig in Viking costume in the Children’s area.

In addition, Maurice Lennon and the Willis Clan will present Lennon’s Brian Ború ‘The High King of Tara’, at the festival. This orchestral suite, written by Lennon in 2002, was produced by Lennon and Donal Lunny, who will also appear at the 2014 Milwaukee Irish Festival. Clare artists Sharon Shannon and Socks in the Frying Pan will also perform at the Fest.

New History Publication From Tipperary Authur Tom Burnell

“To all of the fallen in their silence we offer our own silence, without judgement, and with respect for their ideals, as they knew them,
and for the humanity they expressed towards each other.”

(Extract from the speech by Irish President Michael D Higgins during the dedication of the Cross of Sacrifice at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin this week.)

Dublin born author, Mr Tom Burnell, now resident here in Holycross, Thurles, Co.Tipperary, has penned yet another remarkable factual history book; launched just yesterday entitled “Irishmen In The Great War. Many of our regular readers will be familiar with Tom’s other publications including “Tipperary Casualties of the Great War.”

Tom has taken over twenty-seven Irish newspapers for the period covering the Great War (1914-1918) and has trawled through each and every publication to deliver the most amazing stories of those years, which as we now realise changed our world for ever.

While the book is not necessarily just about Co Tipperary it nevertheless does have many Tipperary people mentioned in it, most of whom survived World War1. Names like:- Miss M. J. Fitzgibbon, Corporal Michael O’Mara (Carrick-on-Suir), Sapper James O’Donnell (Carrick-on-Suir), Private W. Roberts (Clonmel), Corporal A.S. Dowling (Tipperary), Corporal Edward Jackson, (Roscrea), Private Robert Walsh (Carrick-on-Suir), Miss Mary F. Doheny, (Carrick-on-Suir), Sergeant Major Drought Jackson (Roscrea), Captain W. Gibson (Brittas Cashel), Cyril Triscott, Dr Wetterell (Tipperary) and Lance Corporal George White (Knockanvar, Cappawhite).

Contained between these hard covers are the fascinating accounts of the day-to-day lives of men in the front lines; of torpedoed ships; drunken wives, final farewell letters and requests direct from the trenches. There are also many eye-witness accounts of the slaughter as it was happening; battle reports from officers serving in Irish regiments; quirky snippets; chaplains’ sympathetic letters; P.O.W reports of conditions and war poetry.

Here are the tales of the Leinster’s, Munster’s, Connaught’s and Dublin Fusiliers serving in the Ulster Division, 10th and 16th Irish Divisions. We read of medical breakthroughs, paranormal occurrences and miraculous escapes from death.

After the Irish Rebellion of April, 1916, these type of newspaper articles and lists of casualty slowly began to dwindle as here at home Irish hearts would became politically divided.

A cracking great read compiled for the very first time into one single publication and offering a memorable primary source for true lovers of Irish History.

International Miss Macra Festival 2014

This year will celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the International Miss Macra Festival, superbly organised as always by the Clonoulty/Rossmore Macra na Feirme club, here in Co Tipperary.

Calendar of forthcoming Macra Festival events for 2014.

Friday: The festival will kick-start on Friday August 1st when this year’s 21 contestants will meet the Festival Committee in the grounds of the luxury Dundrum House Hotel; beginning midday. Dundrum House Hotel, often described as an ‘Irish Oasis’ set in the heart of Tipperary’s Golden Vale, creates the perfect location for those intent on seeking relaxation and fun. The competitors will then be taken on a tour of the world renowned Coolmore Stud Farm, followed by a ‘Zumba Secession’ in Clonoulty Community Hall. Later that evening the girls will meet up with their host families. The tradition of the contestants staying with host families is very strong within the local community and Macra are extremely grateful for their generosity and commitment by our host families over the past 43 years. This year the Friday night will be a themed disco and what more fitting a theme this year than ‘Farmer Style,’ (Make sure you all have your peaked caps, dungarees and steel capped rubber boots at the ready.)

Saturday: The contestants will awaken early on Saturday morning for their interviews with this year’s competent judges. There are three judges; (1) Declan Ryan who has held every officership on our festival committee, including Chairman throughout the years and is currently the President of Clonoulty/Rossmore Macra club. Joining him will be; (2) Joan Pollard Carew, renowned poet and well known patron of Irish dancing. Joan is also the wife of Michael Carew, of Michael’s Jewellers fame who sponsors annually the second prize in our festival and who has contributed greatly to same in terms of resources, time and advice. This year we are proud to announce that there will be a new judge; (3) joining us will be Caroline Kinane from Tipp FM Radio and we wish her the very best of luck with the tough task of selecting International Miss Macra 2014.

After the interviews on Saturday, the contestants will again have a chance to relax at the annual South Tipperary Macra Raft Race, which will take place in the neighbouring village of Golden at 4.00pm sharp. This activity is mainly for assembled Macra supporters who don a life jacket and make their county proud as the person – made rafts battle the river currents. (Trust me the historic St.Brendan’s voyage wasn’t a patch on this major upcoming event.)

Saturday night will see the girls dressed in their finest; ascend the stage for the cabaret. Mike Egan, previous Macra member, will interview the girls two at the time in front of a marquee full of supporters, friends and family. Once the cabaret is finished the contestants can enjoy themselves, with their supporters, in the Venue to the band ‘Lebowski.’

Sunday: Sunday morning sees the girls attend Church in the local parish of Clonoulty. Afterwards, there will be a Macra family fun and sports day, followed by a barbecue. The contestants will proudly wear their county colours as they battle it out through a custom built Macra obstacle course, complete with parallel Tractor Parking (toy) and a demonstration on Friesian Cow milking (cardboard).

Immediately after these sports, the preparations for the Miss Macra Annual Ball will commence. There will be a hairdresser, Tara and others, on site for each contestants and female committee members. Photographs of the girls plus their escorts will be taken by the festival photographer, beginning at 6.00pm sharp. This will be then followed by a ‘Champagne Reception,’ and a Five Course Banquet which will takes place in the Dundrum House Banqueting Suite.

Following the Banquet and after dinner speeches the band ‘Memphis’ will take to the stage to begin the dancing, until the bewitching hour of 12.00 midnight when the judges will announce this year’s winner, together with those adjudged as taking second and third place. The crowned winner and runners up will then have their photographs taken with the main sponsors of the festival.

Now with the winner crowned; the festival now draws to a close, as the committee breathe a sigh of relief, proud of their many months spent planning, as the entire ballroom fills with Macra and non-Macra members who will continue to dance late into the night.
